The Commissioner oversees and enforces Alberta’s access and privacy laws to ensure their purposes are achieved. The Commissioner may also review Registrar of Motor Vehicle Services decisions to grant access to personal driving and motor vehicle information.
  • Access to Information Act (ATIA) In June 2025, ATIA replaced the access to information provisions in FOIP. This Act provides persons, including individuals and businesses, with the right to obtain access to records in the custody and control of a public body. There are exceptions to this right of access that are limited and specific.
  • Protection of Privacy Act (POPA) In June 2025, POPA replaced the privacy provisions in FOIP. This Act establishes the rules a public body must follow to collect, use and disclose personal information. POPA also establishes rules for data matching and creating non-personal data.
  • Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP)repealed in June 2025 FOIP provides individuals with the right to request access to information in the custody or control of public bodies while providing public bodies with a framework for conducting the collection, use and disclosure of personal information.

  • Health Information Act (HIA) HIA provides individuals with the right to request access to their own health records in the custody or under the control of health custodians while providing custodians with a framework for conducting the collection, use and disclosure of health information.
  • Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) PIPA provides individuals with the right to request access to their own personal information while providing private sector organizations with a framework for conducting the collection, use and disclosure of personal information.
  • Access to Motor Vehicle Information Regulation (AMVIR) Under ATIA (and before that, under FOIP), the Commissioner may review a decision of the Registrar of Motor Vehicle Services to grant or deny access to personal driving and motor vehicle information under AMVIR.
