Legislation

The Commissioner oversees and enforces Alberta’s three access and privacy laws to ensure their purposes are achieved. The Commissioner may also review Registrar of Motor Vehicle Services decisions to grant access to personal driving and motor vehicle information.

  • Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP)
FOIP provides individuals with the right to request access to information in the custody or control of public bodies while providing public bodies with a framework for conducting the collection, use and disclosure of personal information.
  • Health Information Act (HIA)
HIA provides individuals with the right to request access to their own health records in the custody or under the control of health custodians while providing custodians with a framework for conducting the collection, use and disclosure of health information.
  • Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA)
PIPA provides individuals with the right to request access to their own personal information while providing private sector organizations with a framework for conducting the collection, use and disclosure of personal information.
  • Access to Motor Vehicle Information Regulation (AMVIR)
The Commissioner may review a decision of the Registrar of Motor Vehicle Services to grant or deny access to personal driving and motor vehicle information under AMVIR.
