Access to Information Act (ATIA)

The Access to Information Act (ATIA) came into force on June 11, 2025.  It replaced the access to information part of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP Act). The FOIP Act has been repealed and is no longer in force in Alberta, but may still apply in certain circumstances and for a limited time. The official text of ATIA and of the regulations it enables are available on the website of Alberta King's Printer:

The ATIA provides individuals with the right to request access to any information contained in a record that is in the custody or control of a public body, including an individual’s own personal information, subject to limited and specific exceptions set out in the law.

Public bodies subject to the ATIA include:

  • Departments, branches or offices of the Government of Alberta
  • Agencies, boards, commissions, corporations or offices designated in the regulations
  • Municipalities
  • Police services and commissions
  • School boards and charter schools
  • Universities, technical institutes and colleges
  • Provincial health agencies and subsidiary health corporations
  • Métis settlements
  • Public libraries
  • Housing management bodies
  • Drainage and irrigation districts
