Investigator Finds Alberta Solicitor General and Public Security Disclosed an Individual’s Personal Information in Contravention of the FOIP Act

November 6, 2006

On August 25, 2006, the Commissioner received notification from Alberta Solicitor General and Public Security (“the Public Body”) regarding the loss of a file containing personal information about an inmate of the Fort McMurray Correctional Camp.

In response to these allegations, Commissioner Frank Work initiated his own investigation under section 53(1)(a) of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP Act).

The Commissioner’s investigation found the following.

  1. No tracking of Inmate files occurred between the Fort McMurray Correctional Camp and the Fort Saskatchewan Correctional Centre.
  2. No tracking of the delivery and receipt of Inmate files occurred between the Fort McMurray Correctional Camp and the Fort Saskatchewan Correctional Centre.

The Information and Privacy Commissioner made a number of recommendations regarding this issue, which are being addressed by Alberta Solicitor General and Public Security and therefore no further action is warranted by this Office and this case is now closed.
