Commissioner Work Appoints Jill Clayton as Assistant Commissioner to Oversee Private Sector Breach Notification Requirements

June 8, 2010

Information and Privacy Commissioner Frank Work has appointed Jill Clayton as Assistant Commissioner. Ms. Clayton is currently Director of the Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA).

In addition to her regular duties as Director of PIPA, the Commissioner says Clayton will be responsible for the development, implementation and oversight of recent changes to the Personal Information Protection Act, in particular mandatory breach notification requirements. “As the first jurisdiction in Canada to embark on this kind of mandatory notification, we will be setting precedent, and Jill will play a significant role in establishing a breach notification model for Alberta and liaising with other jurisdictions when mandatory reporting is introduced in those jurisdictions.”

Mandatory Breach Notification requires organizations to report a breach of personal information to the Information and Privacy Commissioner, who will then determine if there is a significant risk, and will guide organizations on what steps they should take to notify those impacted by the breach.
